Why Paris Hilton Is Famous (Or Understanding Value In A Post-Madonna World)

I’m amused by Paris Hilton.

If Madonna was Marketing 1.0 then Paris Hilton is Marketing 2.0.

She’s a real life version of what value is and how it is created today.

Every web developer should pay attention to her.

Here is a copy of what Paris said after her recent arrest for DUI.

“I had one margarita (and) was starving because I had not eaten all day,” she said. “Maybe I was speeding a little bit and I got pulled over. I was just really hungry and I wanted to have an In-N-Out Burger.” (source)

Did you notice that?

If not read it again and think.

See it now? (the unpaid product placement)

That’s the real reason Paris Hilton is really famous. Because she is the queen of links.

When Paris first came on the scene with her own user generated sex video she used that attention to create a career. Here’s how she did it.

Though she hired a publisist to get her on Page 6 She never really talked about herself. She talked about other people. She would mention the designers of her clothes, the club she was going to, who made the sweater for her dog, all without any guarantee of any return. She just threw out links.

It didn’t take long for designers and club owners to realize that Paris Hilton was a walking billboard. So they embraced her. She paid attention to them, so they paid attention to her.

The most valuable commodity today is attention. And there are many ways to get it. From sex videos to stupid pet tricks to talking bad about Muslims. The real trick is what you do with it once you have it.

What makes Paris brilliant is that she used the attention she had and gave it to others thereby garning more attention for herself. And it’s been profitable.

Here’s what’s amusing to me though.

Whenever she tries to promote herself, it falls flat. Books, records, movies, etc. don’t work for Paris. Because she’s actually a platform. Like Digg and YouTube.

Paris Hilton has gotten so good at garnering attention for others people are now using the fact that she doesn’t visit as a marketing tool.

In a world where any attention is valuable Paris can’t lose.

And won’t be disappearing anytime soon.

  9. P-A-B-L-O Says:

I agree with your comments and whilst it is a good link-building strategy for a web site I’m not sure how you’d also then avoid the ‘self-promotion results in failure’ trap that you mention. If a site promotes other sites and products, it gains notoriety and prominence but are you then able to market your original content successfully?

Do you then need to have a two-string approach to your marketing? Site #1 acts as a Paris-Platform, linking to all and sundry whereas Site #2 is your real site and is merely cross-referenced now and again from Site #1.

Paris is good at promoting herself as a two dimensional billboard but not as a book, or somebody with “content”. Therefore, how could a web developer do what Paris can’t do, i.e. turn empty into valuable content.

  62. Matt Says:

Trouble is, the logic doesn’t work nearly as well for people who aren’t in her situation. She’s a billionaire hotel heiress. She doesn’t need to monetize her fame…just fly around the world having something approximating fun. And if she happens to hit on something profitable…well, that’s cool too, but it’s not really the core objective.

If you could break down her financials, I’ll bet anything that her “I was a billionaire the day I was born” cash flow substantially exceeds her “now I’m a FAMOUS billionaire!” cash flow…if, in fact, the latter is even in the black at all.

Which is not to say that what you’re saying isn’t TRUE…just that it isn’t nearly as RELEVANT as you seem to think it is.

personally, i think she’s a low life. i usually give people the benefit of the doubt, but not in her case. i believe her to be manipulative and shrewd in terms of her own self promotion. she’s just a joke, but see… we’re talking about her so who is more foolish?

This is a load of crap, I’m sorry. Sure Paris Hilton makes money because she’s a corporate whore. But that’s not WHY she’s famous.

Chartreuse congrats into this compelling inquiry.

It is hungry post-modern consumer-craving that Paris knows how to satiate.
As such she is a marketing guru. Surely part of the finger-pointing lies with the consumers themselves? The commoditisation of our globalized age is
here to stay. Question is how to become more discerningly agile under and
    within its confines.

Publicity-thirsty diva airheads, irrespective of name or credence, might actually
tone down their hysteria if consumers were more savyy. Celebs are the corollary of marketing in a mind-numbingly commoditized world- or to subjectively flip the proverbial coin- in an open choice-laden society. Surely the emblem of a free world ?

Silk-stalking socialists should not conduct patronising probes into
social consciousness but rather leverage celebrity tidal-waves
for commercial acumen. Surely a sound proposition ?

    Your thoughts Chartreuse ?

  238. Zach Says:

Paris Hilton is a genius. I think people attack her out of jealousy. Just because she had a ‘sex tape’ which was leaked out from when she had been dating a guy doesn’t make her a whore. Pamela Anderson and Jenna Jameson are attacked less for being slutty and that doesn’t make much sense. I think people should analyze where their hate comes from when they attack a human being. Yes these girls are human beings with feelings too. I say way to go Paris for her achievements! Also I just want to add… Paris Hilton worked her way from the bottom with money or no money just like every other famous person. There are tons of women with even more money than Paris who want to be famous and never make it. Paris Hilton earned her position in the limelight. There is something so intriguing about this girl, she fascinates so many people and you never know what she’s going to do next and I think people love that about her. She stood out and she became famous. Admit it.

shes famous for no real reason, her parents were rich and girls think shes awesome for no real reason either…
ignorance runs rampant in this country… Lol

  250. Ruben Says:

Actually you got it wrong Paris is a genius at marketing her self she has managed to make 250 million dollars off her fragrance line alone, her clothing line sold out the first day it hit shelfs even the pre-orders were out,she has also managed to photo graphed wearing her clothing, shoes, handbags, etc on the red carpet,on the street, and even walking out of jail!
& that’s just the beginning of the Paris Hilton brand!

  251. Ted Says:

Indeed PH has made a trend around her name, though not much to digg inside her personality. But that sells for now, isn’t it? Who knows what future market trends will be around her? Only time will tell .. and her marketing skills 🙂

  252. Ronnie Says:

quite an interesting concept. She fails when doing anything for herself but only works when she goes sticks to what works for her.. that is promoting others. A human billboard so to speak.

  253. Hi readers posters one n all … I think she is just living her life as she wants to … what ever the media thinks about her is of no consequence to her … she is only playing a game … think about it she has all the wealth health happiness in this world she has only to click her fingers and she can have virtually any thing her heart desires I can imagine her laughing every day as the press follow her every move and try and work out what she is all about I like her but if I never set eyes on her again I would not lose any sleep over that

all I would like is a tenth of her marketing activity as a ad-on to all the fuss she attracts

All my best to you and your media success

  270. “Because she’s actually a platform.” Hysterical. You made me laugh for the double entendre alone whether intentional or not, but your overall point is insightful. You’re onto something here, and the point you make emphasizes the nature of promotion and attention in our Web 2.0 world. It’s a two-way, ten-way, one-million-way street now. It’s no longer about communicating AT people. Instead it’s about communicating WITH them.

  288. Interesting post but I know from a very secure source that the porn video was not a publicity stunt.

Paris always knew where to go and what to do to get attention but she is not the kind of person that wants scandals in her life.

From the marketing point of view she is one of the best in the celebrity world, without a doubt. But her biggest trade is entrepreneurship and in this Paris Hilton kicks ass.

  293. Meg Says:

She has a sexiness about her. It helped that she was born into the social elite so that alone made her interesting to many people. So she had a huge head start over just some other pretty girl. Sort of like Donald Trump saying he is self made. Its much easier when you are born into.

  294. PoomDomain Says:

If paris hilton is a real marketing genius despite all kinds of images she express herself, then i guess she is something much much more than wat we think she is

  295. Good points. Although I think her success is entirely accidental and mostly related to that fact that her last name is Hilton.

I think she started out just liking to talk about “stuff” – things, toys, material items because she is…..well a material girl. That that started to work in her favor.

She is not dumb. I will give her that.

I heard about the Advanced Elements AdvancedFrame sponsor thing, I still think she’s hot though.

My buddy able went to a party and met her, said the ditsy thing was a hollywood act and that she is really down to earth.

  325. Well she’s hot and rich, and socially taboo. Not to mention a paparazzi sideshow, she is famous because our media makes her so. If they decided to make her disappear from there media and magazines we would never hear about her.

The only reason she is famous is that we take pictures and write stories about her, I’d rather take about her watersports blog or treasure hunting!
