the sad self-destruction of the red hot chili peppers

when i woke up this morning
i was was confronted with the news that our record has been leaked to
the internet
it does not come out til may 9 but now it has leaked
and not that i know alot about this kind of thing
but i guess now it is possible to down load it for free if you want
well
that's not very nice

if you down load it now off one of these file sharing sites
you will be getting a pale imitation of the record
it will be of the poor sound quality of the technique they used to
get it on there
and that will break my heart
it will break john frusciante's heart
it will break anthony kiedis's heart
and it will break the heart of chad smith
yes, we worked for a year and a half to make the epic record of our
lives
and it is sad to me for the business reasons of course
i think we are selling something really cool and we put all we had
into it, 28 songs, 2 hours of the best that we can offer
and i think it is a fair deal for everyone
and for people to just steal a poor sound quality version of it for free
because some asshole stole it and put it on the internet
is sad to me
but, equitable business reasons aside
the thing that really bums me out is
we worked so hard, and so thoughtfully, all of us, for so long
to make this record sound as warm and full from top to bottom
as was possible
we spent day and night for a year making sure every little sound was
just right
that they were all put together in the most beautiful way we could
we did not leave a stone unturned in doing that work
i can not put in words how much this record, stadium arcadium, means
to us
how sacred the sound of it is to us
and how many sleepless nights and hardworking days we all had
thinking about how to make it be the best sounding thing we could
and now, for someone to take it and put it out there with this poor
sound quality
it is a painful pill for us to swallow
let me tell you
this bums all of us out
and i know that, as sensitive as john frusciante is about sound
the idea of anyone getting and hearing this thing that way
will devastate him
for people to not hear the work the way we meant it to be
will really hurt him deep inside
and all of us will hurt

yes, it is stealing from us, and that is lame
everyone has to live with their own conscience on that one
let it be your guide
but to take a version that has been defiled sound wise
a version in which some idiot has taken our year and a half of soul
baring work and pissed all over it
that will break our hearts

sincerely,

flea
[I have a lot I could say on this but others already have. I love RHCP but here's the deal in a nutshell. Sales of this 28 song album will not be effected negatively unless it sucks. And since you read this far here are two gifts. A link to the not on her new album but a gift to fans but not very good Janet Jackson single 'lookout weekend' and a list of the best cities to buy bootleg cds]

  1. David Krug Says:

What they should have done is gone ahead and let these guys steal. Make no fuss of it. Just tell the fans it was a gift from some idiot stick and move on. This leaked email is worse. It shows that they are pissed and what not. What they should do is right a song to the thief and release it for free. Guarantee a few million downloads of that one.

  2. Even with all the things that people have shown that this is a great way to let fans sample music or movies, they still continually look at it as a threat to their existence rather than an extraordinary marketing tool.

I still can’t believe that the music industry and MPAA are endlessly fighting this rather than embracing it and using it to let the viral effect run its course. Even now they still don’t get it.

  3. chartreuse Says:

    You both are absolutely right.
The people searching for leaked RHCP tracks are fans. And those are the same folks who will invest in the album after they have heard the songs.

  4. i like the cool dudes in the underwear though

  5. gonzoblog Says:

First off: The Chillies. Great band. Dumb Move.

Haven’t they heard of the power of viral, buzz, word o’ mouth etc.,

Rather than that whimpering post from Flea he should have said something like … “Some F***ers have gotten a hold of our new CD and slapped it on the Internet. You Pig Swine (blah, blah). It’s a little inferior but go ahead and knock yourselves out. Also, Do Not spread this (translation: Yes please, spread long and spread wide). The End.

If I’m a real fan I like to get my hands on everything and anything – doesn’t matter what quality it is. My fav group is Motley Crue (do.not.laugh) and I’ve got just about everything that’s been slapped online … and lots of it is crappy … but guess what: I love it.

  6. jerry brown Says:

this band rocks, dont steal from them.

remember a thief is always worried about a thief

  7. Zub Flop Says:

Last album I bought was the Beastie Boys latest. Of course, I downloaded it first to check it out. It was good enough that I bought it. Sure, I felt guilty. I don’t want a penny of mine going to the RIAA. But I figured, the Beastie Boys will get some money from it and I want them to keep going.

Can you believe that? I feel guilty for buying albums. What a world.

  8. badborg Says:

I read this email and I want to buy the CD. I think this email is going to spread fast and there will be people like me reading and thinking the same.

  9. Pita Says:

Well, the big problem with this is that the band doesn’t make any money. No money means not able to live on thier music. No music means no band. Fact is that you don’t make much money on consetrs, and that is what many people don’t understand. If people keep downloading this kind of stuff, the music buisness will die out, becouse of the lack of money.

  10. upsidedown818 Says:

I love how the guy intends to infer his credibility in the subject of music when he’s too insecure with his own musical taste to refrain from the use a lame pillow like “do.not.laugh” preceding his favorite band…Motley Crüe is fucking awesome. RHCP is awesome…

    You can’t talk shit…and be a pussy…doesn’t work…makes you look stupid.

    Flea’s right.

    john brown is right.

And Karma has been doing its job for centuries, it’s not gonna stop now…someday, after a badass life of listening to pirated music…you will be violated by your mortician.
