A Friday Quiz: What Do People Really Want To Know?
It’s Friday so how about a quiz?
Let’s be journalists for a second.
What’s the lead in this short story?
Principal Dulany, of Seacrest high school, has annouced he will be taking all teachers and staff to the Future Of Education summit at the Hyatt next Thursday.. The all day event will have talks by popular bloggers such as Erick Schonfeld, Robert Scoble and Mathew Ingram. Also speaking will be Kareem Mayan, founder of Education Revolution. “Having the staff learn about new educational techniques is good for the students,” Principal Dulany said.
Again, what’s the lead?
Of course the lead is obvious to anyone remotely involved with Seacrest High School:
There is no school next Thursday.
As a blogger/writer/communicator/business owner it’s important that you are able to wade through the bullshit and get to the core.
A few days ago I complained about a missing post on this blog and others hosted by WordPress.com.
Matt and his crew didn’t bother giving me a long song and dance about the issues. Instead they got to the core and had my post returned.
How can I not appreciate that?
These days people are bombarded with information.
Bombarded with choices.
Smart people and companies realize that we just want to know that there is no school on Thursday.
(even if there is.)

That is one of my favorite examples in Made to Stick. It really makes the point clear. Useful stuff for any communicator, journalist, blogger, co-worker, or CEO.

You live at the core. I always knew that.

A friend working with me on a project gave me that example yesterday as we argued about how to edit something. The fact it was in a boook doesn’t surprise me. He’s a well read motherfucker!
And you’re right Liz. I’m a core kinda guy.
Oh, and thanks mom!

That ‘quiz’ was given to me in my first year of journalism class. I now use it to teach my journalism students. It’s classic.

A classic example of ultimate benefit extraction, a topic well-explored by copywriters and advertising legends well before Dan and Chip Heath made anything stick with their book. And oh wait… didn’t that Aristotle guy came up with the idea in Rhetoric over 2,000 years ago? 🙂
