There’s a guy named Alberto who sits on a milk crate next to a large electrical box outside my building. On the electrical box sits an opened pack of Newport cigarettes.
He sells the cigarettes for a quarter each to people as they go by.
Today I chatted with him and got some of the ins and outs of the Newport economy.
The killer app on the internet has always been mp3s.
It’s the reason kids got on the net in the first place (napster) and it’s the quiet little engine that drives MySpace, TagWorld, and other social networks.
The music business adds to the bottomline of coffee sellers (Starbucks), movie makers and even clothing manufacturers.
It’s also the most corrupt business on the planet.
But this post is not about that.
It’s about Madonna.
And how US radio has tried to destroy her. Really.
Nanjing Automobile, owner of what used to be MG of Birmingham, England, has decided to build a manufacturing plant in Ardmore, Oklahoma. Nanjing joins Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and Hyundai with auto manufacturing plants all over the United States.
They say that high U.S. labor costs make manufacturing a losing business
in America.
But U.S. labor costs only seem to be a problem for U.S.companies.
Apparently, everyone can make money building cars in America -except Americans.
