better late than never

December 18, 2008

When I posted an email sent to me by a friend about the atrocities going on in post-Katrina New Orleans many people were shocked and wondered, if the stories were true, where was the mainstream media.

Well it looks like they have finally arrived.

In an 18-month investigation appearing this week on the cover of The Nation and supported by the Nation Institute Investigative Fund, reporter A.C. Thompson paints a terrifying picture of New Orleans in the days following Hurricane Katrina. Black residents, desperate to flee the Lower Ninth Ward gunned down with impunity by white vigilantes in the Algiers Point neighborhood, which stood between the Lower Ninth Ward and the rescue point. In Katrina’s Hidden Race War and a companion piece, Body of Evidence, Thompson uncovers at least eleven unreported, un-investigated vigilante shootings.

This is the point of the conversation where I unfortunately have to say “I told you so.”
